Slovenia to join Powering Past Coal Alliance at COP26
Ljubljana - The government has decided that Slovenia will join the Powering Past Coal Alliance as part of the Energy Day at the COP26 conference in Glasgow on Thursday, dedicated to enhancing global energy transition, and will also sign a statement of public support for the clean energy transition.
The Energy Day is one of five campaigns prepared by the UK as the chair of the COP26 that involves various stakeholders by individual sectors, the Government Communication Office said on Tuesday.
At the event dedicated to energy, round tables at the ministerial level are expected to be held, with one of the key events to be hosted by the Powering Past Coal Alliance, which looks to accelerate the fossil fuel phase-out of coal-fired power stations.
Measures to accelerate the fossil fuel phase-out at the global level and priority measures to achieve the end of coal use will be discussed at the event.
"The world's leading figures will debate progress in ending public and private coal funding and the important role of non-state players in promoting the transition from coal to clean energy," the government said.
As part of the Energy Day, countries will be able to support and sign a Statement on Public Support for the Clean Energy Transition, with the purpose of adopting the broadest possible commitment at the international level for fossil fuel phase-out.
The goal is to take the world to an ambitious, clearly defined path towards climate neutrality, which is compatible with the goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius and in line with the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, the government said.
"Slovenia supports the strengthening of the global climate ambition as the only way way to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, in accordance with the report of the IPCC on limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius."
The government added that Slovenia supported the Powering Past Coal Alliance initiative and that it would accede to it, and that it supported and that it would sign the Statement on Public Support for the Clean Energy at the COP26.
