Slovenian men start chess championship with win

Sport

Čatež ob Savi - The Slovenian teams competing in the European Team Chess Championship got off to a mixed start to the competition on Friday, with the men's team defeating Ireland and the women's team surprisingly losing to Belgium.

The men's first team, ranked 19th, defeated the much lower-ranked Ireland 3.5:0.5 as Jure Borišek was the only one to cede half a point.

The women's first team lost 1:3 to Belgium, not having fielded their top player, Laura Unuk, for the opening round.

The top-ranked teams in both men's and women's competition, Russia, predictably notched up their first wins.

The Russian men beat Greece 3:1, whereas the women won all four matches against the Czech Republic.

The championship lasts nine rounds and will wrap up next Sunday.
