Nations League draw pits Slovenia against Sweden, Norway and Serbia
Nyon - Slovenia's national football side will play Sweden, Norway and Serbia in the third iteration of the UEFA Nations League in June and September next year, in group 4 of League B, a draw in Nyon has decided.
"It's great group, I couldn't wish for a more optimal one," Matjaž Kek, Slovenia's head coach, commented. "These are opponents that have weight. These are proper teams and proper fixtures for Slovenia."
Kek said it might have not dawned on some people until now what it meant for Slovenia to win in its group in League C in the second iteration of the competition in 2020 to advance to League B.
"These are truly top teams in a new time slot. Four matches in the June slot, it's unbelievable. It's such a big challenge, a mini European championship as it were."
Kek hopes Slovenia will show they have the edge and quality. "I'm confident we'll be watching good games," said Kek, who has recently extended his contract with the Slovenian Football Association (NZS).
NZS president Radenko Mijatović shared Kek's enthusiasm. "I must say we got an extremely tough but attractive group [...] I'm looking forward to good games and a solid result."
The group stage of the competition will see four rounds in June and two rounds in September next year. Each team will play three games at home and three away.
