Radovljica - The Wall - Climb for Gold, a British documentary, will open the 16th Mountain Film Festival on Monday evening, which will feature 29 films from 13 countries ranging from mountaineering and climbing to mountain nature and culture until 19 February, when the best films receive awards.

The opening documentary follows the stories of four Olympic athletes, including Slovenia's Janja Garnbret, from qualification to their performance on the big stage.

Garnbret and film director Nick Hardie will attend tonight's premiere at Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, which has already sold out and another screening is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Slovenian climbing star is also the protagonist of Janja Garnbret: The Perfect Season, another film, from the US, that will be shown at the festival.

The festival brings some epic stories from the Himalayas and Karakoram Range, including Traditional Alpinism - Experience Cannot Be Inherited, which takes viewers to the Karakoram with Reinhold Messner and his son Simon.

Among the films focussing on mountain nature and culture are The Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas and the Chinese-Austrian co-production Snow Leopards and Friends.

Slovenian filmmakers will have seven films screened, including Literature in the Vertical World, a trilogy exploring mountaineering and literary works by legendary Slovenian climbers by Boštjan Virc and Rožle Bregar.

Nejc Kavka's 30 Peaks for 30 Years of Independent Slovenia meanwhile follows Andraž, who decides to climb 30 mountains to mark Slovenia's 30th birthday.

The films will be screened in Ljubljana, Radovljica, Domžale and Celje, with an international jury selecting several winners.

Apart from giving out the Grand Prix, the festival will reward best films in categories such as mountaineering; climbing; mountains, sports and adventure; mountain nature and culture; and short film, while public broadcaster TV Slovenija will give out its own award.

The jury consists of Polish director and climber Eliza Kubarska, the director of last year's winner The Wall of Shadows, Bosnian climber and author of 36 documentaries Zehrudin Isaković, and Slovenian climber and writer Milan Romih.
