Ljubljana - The Berlin Philharmonic, one of the world's most celebrated orchestras, will perform in Ljubljana tonight, visiting the city for a second time after a space of more than 120 years.

"The concert hall was sold out completely," the newspaper Delo quotes an excerpt from the Laibacher Zeitung report on Monday, 30 April 1900, after Berliner Philharmoniker gave a concert at the Ljubljana Philharmonic Society's Hall in Congress Square the previous Saturday as part of their spring tour of Europe.

The Ljubljana Newspaper as the German name of the paper translates reported that the audience welcomed all pieces on the programme "with enthusiastic, endless joy".

At the time the orchestra was conducted by Hans Richter. A hundred and more years on, they will perform at Cankarjev Dom, not far away from the Philharmonic Hall, under the baton of Kirill Petrenko, the current artistic director.

The orchestra also includes three Slovenian musicians. The young clarinettists Andraž Golob and Matic Kuder joined last year and horn player Andrej Žust has been with the orchestra for several years.

The Berlin Philharmonic are stopping in Ljubljana as part of a tour that will also take them to Vienna and Zagreb. They will perform Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Photoptosis, Witold Lutoslawski's Symphony No. 1 and Johannes Brahms's Symphony No. 2 in D major.
