Nice - Slovenian rider Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) won the Paris-Nice race on Sunday after he held on to his advantage by finishing third in the final stage.

Roglič's main rival in the race, Brit Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco), won the final, eight stage after attacking hard with 19 kilometres to go, but that was not enough for the overall victory. He was thus second overall, and Colombia's Daniel Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) was third.

This is Roglič's 62nd win in total and his second so far this season. His Belgian teammate Wout Van Aert, who helped the Slovenian a lot on their way towards Nice, finished second today.

"It seems that it cannot go without at least some drama. Once again it was very difficult. But I have to admit that I feel at least a little bit better and happier than after last year's race. I have to thank the whole team, especially Van Aert. He is half man, half engine. He can do everything," Roglič, 32, told the organisers.

Last year he crashed twice in the last stage of the race and, without the help of his teammates, had to concede to Maximilian Schachmann of Germany.

Having won his tenth World Tour multi-day race, Roglič is now only behind Britain's Chris Froome (12 wins) among active riders. Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar won his sixth World Tour multi-stage race today after defending his Tirreno-Adriatico title.

Both Roglič and Pogačar will compete in the Milano-Sanremo race on Saturday.
