Rally for LGBT rights held in front of Hungarian Embassy
Ljubljana - Amnesty International Slovenia staged a small rally in front of the Hungarian Embassy in Ljubljana on Thursday ahead of Sunday's referendum on LGBT rights. Members of the Pride Parade association also took part, expressing indignation over systemic suppression of LGBTIQ+ communities in Hungary, Russia and Poland. They also mentioned Slovenia.
The NGO said in a statement that the referendum in Hungary would be about preventing access to LGBTIQ+ contents to young people. Hungarian PM Viktor Orban announced a referendum last July to "protect children against LGBTIQ+ propaganda", it said.
Later the government indeed requested the referendum, and the Constitutional Court endorsed it, while a law was passed in parliament allowing it to be conducted together with the general election, which had previously been banned in Hungary, Amnesty said.
