Ljubljana - The Freedom Movement has narrowly overtaken the ruling Democrats (SDS) in the latest opinion poll commissioned by the public broadcaster TV Slovenija from Mediana and is now one percentage point ahead.

The party of Robert Golob gained 1.7 points since a month ago to 19.7% as PM Janez Janša's party added just 0.4 points to 18.7%.

The Social Democrats (SD) in third polled at 8.2%, half a point up from March, and the fellow opposition party, the Left improved by 0.8 points to 6.4%.

New Slovenia (NSi) is in fifth at 5%, down half a point, ahead of Connecting Slovenia - the alliance that includes another junior coalition partner Concretely - which polled at 3.7%, up 1.7 points.

The LMŠ, the party of the former PM Marjan Šarec, slipped back by as much as 2.4 points to 3.3% to tie with the National Party (SNS), another opposition party, which gained 1.6 points.

The SAB, the party of another former PM, Alenka Bratušek, slumped to 2.8% from 4% a month ago.

Just over 10% of those questioned are still undecided.

The voter approval rating for the government remains broadly flat with 47.1% rating its job as negative, up 1.4 points, against 27.9% who rate it positively, down 1.2 points. Another 21.3% gave it an average score.

President Borut Pahor continues to top the popularity ranking of politicians ahead of Robert Golob and parliamentary Speaker Igor Zorčič.

Asked about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 61% of those questioned condemned it and 81% supported providing humanitarian and diplomatic aid to Ukraine with 78% in favour of Slovenia accepting Ukrainian refugees.

The poll was conducted among 1,025 on 30 and 31 March.
