Stanley Cup Winner Kopitar Welcomed Home

The Los Angeles Kings centre, who kept Slovenia awake in recent weeks for broadcasts that started at around 2 AM local time, labelled the reception incredible, while apologising to the fans for depriving them of their sleep.

"But I think it was worth it and that we will celebrate accordingly. The first cup is always the sweetest and I hope it is not the last one," said the 24-year-old, who was one of the two leading scorers of the NHL playoffs this year.

Kopitar said the goal for the next season was defending the title. "We realize that 29 other teams want the title as well...but our team will not change. All the main players are still under contract."

Kopitar, who was also the first Slovenian player to make it into the NHL, left the airport for his home town of HruĊĦica, where the central party celebrating his feat will take place tonight.
