Ljubljana - Medical organisations expect the new government formed after Sunday's election to deal with issues in public healthcare system as a priority with one of their demands being proper pay for doctors.

With the Freedom Movement, the party that won the election, having pledged to deal with long wait times and other issues in healthcare as a priority, FIDES, the trade union of doctors and dentists, said the new government would have to move from promises to action as soon as possible.

"Slovenian healthcare is need of a comprehensive reform, not just partial solutions that we have been able to hear as election promises and which have often proved ineffective," said FIDES, urging a pay reform as a priority.

They believe remuneration of healthcare staff should be made more like those in efficient systems of West European countries to keep doctors in the public healthcare, FIDES said, adding that the solution is a new systemic bill for healthcare ready in the health minister's drawer.

They believe the current public sector pay system is the main reason why both experienced and junior doctors are leaving Slovenian healthcare.

The Medical Chamber called for a health system that will provide timely, accessible, safe and quality health services to every citizen based on the solidarity principle.

They advocate drawing up a national plan of personnel resources in healthcare and incentives for work in less attractive areas both geographically and field of expertise-wise.

They repeated the demand for healthcare to be extracted from the single public sector pay system and believe a system should be set up in which doctors choose whether to work as pubic employees or private practitioners.

They also called for overhaul of IT system to alleviate administrative burden and make the system more accessible. Managements of public health institutions should be allowed greater flexibility to organise work and reward employees.
