Warsaw - President Borut Pahor began his official three-day visit to Poland at the University of Warsaw on Thursday discussing Europe's future with the students, and calling for a new convention on the future of Europe that would gradually lead to a United States of Europe.

Considering the European idea as the most brilliant political concept ever conceived, Pahor said we must be brave and proud to preserve and develop it, his office said.

He stressed that he had called on several occasions for a new Convention on the Future of Europe that would lead to a new European constitution and eventually to a United States of Europe. He believes that EU citizens should be given the option of electing a European president.

This concept would not entail a "melting pot" like in the US, it would be a way of preserving different identities and strengthening cooperation, Pahor told the students.

He also stressed that Europe should remain open to the countries in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Pahor then met with Slovenian language students, laid a wreath at the monument to the Unknown Fallen Soldier and met the speakers of both chambers of Polish parliament.

His office pointed out that relations between Slovenia and Poland were excellent and bilateral cooperation was developing in several areas and at several levels.

Pahor and Polish President Andzej Duda will meet on Friday to expectedly discuss a number of topics, including the war in Ukraine.

The visit will also be an opportunity to mark 30 years of Slovenian-Polish diplomatic relations.
