Minister visits Slovenian community in Barcola


Barkovlje - Minister for Slovenians Abroad Helena Jaklitsch attended an event in Barcola, a neighbourhood of Trieste, on Friday to mark the 40th anniversary of the re-establishment of the local Slovenian cultural association. She congratulated the Slovenian community there for preserving and strengthening the Slovenian identity.

Jaklitsch congratulated the association for decades of efforts to preserve and strengthen Slovenian identity, language and culture in Barcola, Italy, where ethnic Slovenians have been living for centuries, reads a press release by the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad.

The event was also dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the naming of a local Slovenian primary school after the writer Fran Saleški Finžgar (1871-1962). In her address, the minister thanked the school staff for their work.

Italian senator Tatjana Rojc, who is a member of the Slovenian minority in Italy, was in attendance as well.
