Ljubljana - Only a day after confirming its first case of monkeypox, Slovenia reported a second case of infection with the virus on Wednesday. Like the first case, the infected person had travelled to Spain, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) has announced on its website.

The first case of monkeypox was confirmed in a man who returned from the Canary Islands. The patient developed the symptoms after arriving in Slovenia, Mario Fafangel, chief epidemiologist with the NIJZ, told reporters on Tuesday. He said the man was feeling well.

He said the risks for the broader society associated with the infection were low.

Those who have had a high-risk contact with an infected person are advised to monitor their condition for the next three weeks. They are not required to quarantine. Meanwhile, infected persons are recommended to stay at home for three weeks or until the scabs fall off.

The government on Tuesday decided for measures set forth by the communicable diseases act to be applied to monkeypox, saying that the infection with the virus should be included as soon as possible in the first group of communicable diseases that all healthcare providers need to report.
