Ljubljana - Ivan Simič, the director general of the Tax Administration, stepped down on Wednesday, announcing his decision just minutes after the new government was sworn in.

Simič, a staunch supporter of the Janez Janša government, was named to the post in acting capacity in May 2021 before getting a full five-year term in November the same year. Soon after Robert Golob's Freedom Movement won the election, he announced that he would step down.

"I am withdrawing together with the government giving the new finance minister the chance to pick a new director who suits his criteria. For me this is a perfectly normal move when the government changes," he said in late May.

Simič served his first stint at the Financial Administration during the first Janša government. At the time, he stepped down two months before the election.
