Environment & Nature

Ljubljana - Slovenia ranks seventh out of 180 countries in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which is calculated by Yale University to assess the state of sustainable environmental care.

Denmark tops the rankings with a score of 77.9, followed by the UK with 77.7 and Finland with 76.5. Malta scored 75.2 points, Sweden 72.7 and Luxembourg 72.3.

Slovenia is in seventh place with 67.3 points. It is followed by Austria, Switzerland and Iceland.

Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar and India are at the bottom of the rankings.

"High-scoring countries exhibit long standing and continuing investments in policies that protect environmental health, preserve biodiversity and habitat, conserve natural resources, and decouple greenhouse gas emissions from economic growth," says the report.

"Slovenia, the highest scoring Eastern European nation ... earns its spot in part due to ambitious habitat conservation efforts. Under the EU's Natura 2000 initiative, Slovenia has protected over 30% of its territories - more than any other European nation.

"These efforts have led some observers to call Slovenia the 'Park of Europe'," the report moreover says.
