Ljubljana - The deputy group of the opposition Democrats (SDS) has proposed a resolution in support of a resolution by the European Parliament that is dedicated to the fight against impunity for war crimes in Ukraine. The party has requested an extraordinary session for the National Assembly to vote on the matter.

"The fact is that the aggression in Ukraine began on 24 February, when Russia launched a frontal assault on virtually the entire area of Ukraine. It has since reorganised itself, but the consequences of attacks that took place, say, in the Bucha area, reverberate around the world," MP Branko Grims said on Tuesday.

He said the crimes that were committed there showed clear signs of genocide, adding that this "naturally cannot remain without response or consequences".

The proposed resolution would back another resolution by the EU Parliament, adopted in May, that urges the EU to take all necessary measures to support the prosecution of those responsible for crimes against humanity committed during the war in Ukraine.

The Parliament's resolution calls on the Union to support the establishment of a special international tribunal to punish the aggression against Ukraine - for which the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction - and to try Russian political leaders and military commanders and their allies.

The SDS has also called on parliamentary Speaker Urška Klakočar Zupančič to invite Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to address the Slovenian parliament, Grims said.

The party's move comes after Prime Minister Robert Golob announced that Slovenia's stance on the war in Ukraine will be shaped by the parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee.
