Ljubljana - Prime Minister Robert Golob talked to his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal on the phone on Wednesday, expressing Slovenia's firm support for the war-torn country, its sovereignty and peace efforts, the prime minister's office said in a press release.

They discussed the situation in Ukraine and the upcoming EU Council session, where Ukraine is to be one of the main topics.

Golob moreover expressed support for Ukraine's efforts to acquire EU candidate status and Slovenia's firm support for the Western Balkans.

Shmyhal thanked him for Slovenia's treatment of Ukrainian refugees and requested that Slovenia help with demining of his country, Golob's office said in a press release.

Golob promised Slovenia would help with demining, and decisively condemned Russia's aggression, saying it went against the UN Charter.

"Slovenia fully respects the basic principles of international relations and thus rejects any form of violence. Unity of the EU is of vital importance," the press release said.

Golob's talk with Shmyhal comes shortly after Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon indicated that Slovenia would change its policy toward Ukraine - turning from military aid to humanitarian and development aid.

Golob meanwhile said on Monday that Slovenia's policy toward Ukraine would be determined by the National Assembly. Recently, two opposing letters have been addressed to the government regarding Slovenia's policy toward Ukraine.
