Ljubljana - The parliamentary Culture Committee has called on the management of RTV Slovenija to consistently ensure the constitutional right to information, to immediately stop undermining the editorial independence and autonomy of the public broadcaster, and to restore conditions for independent journalism.

The management should also stop implementing politically-motivated personnel and other changes, and stop discrediting RTV staff or exerting pressure on them, the committee urged at Wednesday's meeting, where they debated the situation at the public broadcaster, where tensions have been running high amidst another strike.

The committee called on the RTV Slovenija programme council to carry out its work impartially and professionally and in accordance with the law on the public broadcaster.

Meanwhile, motions sponsored by the opposition Democrats (SDS) were not endorsed. They proposed calling on the government to end the political pressure on the RTV management and urging RTV staff and the management to resolve their conflicts.

The coalition members on the committee noted during the debate that the situation at the public broadcaster was alarming, a point that was also highlighted by a representative of the RTV journalists' strike committee.

The management dismissed the allegations, and the opposition members argued that the strike was a way to oppose the changes that the management was implementing to provide an improved version of the public service media outlet.
