Slovenia's Černivec becomes first woman GM in British basketball

London - Slovenian Vanja Černivec has become the first woman general manager in British women's basketball, as she has been appointed to the post in the London Lions women's basketball team, the reigning champions of the Women's British Basketball League (WBBL).

The appointment was confirmed on the website of the club as reported by the sport portals Sportal and

The former basketball player, who played for Maribor, Ježica and Triglav, was previously the first international female scout in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA), working for the Chicago Bulls.

While Černivec is the first ever woman general manager in a club competing in the WBBL, she will also serve as global director of London Lions Academy, the club's website says.

The British champions were undefeated in the previous season after scoring 34 wins in a row, and the long-term goal is to play in the EuroLeague Women, with Černivec expected to help them in the process.

"In my previous role with the NBA League Office, I had many opportunities to work with young players at grassroots as well as elite level," the Slovenian told the club's website.

"I see the connection with my new role at the London Lions. I'm super excited about the role of becoming general manager," she added.
