Freedom Movement officially nominates Kos for president

Politics

Ljubljana - The senior coalition Freedom Movement confirmed its vice president Marta Kos as its candidate for the autumn presidential election on Wednesday. The decisions by the party's executive committee and party council were unanimous.

Mirta Koželj, the party council president, said there were no doubts in the party about the nomination, including in the light of criticism that if Kos won, it would be inadmissible to have members of a single party holding the three top positions in the state.

"It is the responsibility of the political party which leads the country to nominate the most competent candidate," added the party's secretary general Matej Arčon.

When asked which of the rivals will pose the biggest threat, he said the party was not thinking about that. "That's not our mission. Our mission is to put forward the best candidate with the best manifesto to represent all Slovenians."

Considering Kos's "experience, references, integrity and values she promotes," the party believes she will make it into a second round of the election and win.

Apart from Kos, presidential run has been announced by lawyer Nataša Pirc Musar, psychoanalytic Nina Krajnik, former Foreign Minister Anže Logar, musician Gregor Bezenšek Jr., Kočevje Mayor Vladimir Prebilič and Leo Trojar of the Anthroposophic Society.

Candidates who wish to run need to submit 5,000 signatures of support or get the support of a political party and submit the signatures of three MPs or submit 3000 voter signatures and ten MP signatures.
