July consumer confidence worst since outset of Covid epidemic

Economy

Ljubljana - The consumer confidence in Slovenia in July was at its lowest point since April 2020, the first month after the outset of the Covid-19 epidemic, with the value of the relevant indicator dropping by six percentage points compared to June to -39 points, the Statistics Office reported on Thursday.

The drop was mainly caused by the considerably more pessimistic expectations of consumers regarding the economic situation in the country, which saw a drop of 12 percentage points on a monthly basis.

The three remaining components of the overall indicator also deteriorated, with the sub-indicator measuring the expectations regarding the financial situation in households in the next 12 months dropping by five points to the lowest point ever.

The indicator measuring the assessments of the current financial situation in households was down by four points and that measuring the expectations regarding major purchases in the next 12 months declining by three points.

This is largely a consequence of the continued major concerns about the growth of prices of energy and food, the Statistics Office noted.

The value of the consumer confidence indicator dropped by 22 percentage points year-on-year, and by 17 points compared to the 2021 average. The last time it was this low was in April 2020, the first month after the outset of the Covid-19 epidemic.
