Interactive audiobook honouring Prekmurje dialect in the making
Murska Sobota - An interactive audiobook celebrating the very distinct dialect of the country' eastern-most region of Prekmurje was announced on Tuesday ahead of Unification of Prekmurje Slovenians with the Homeland Day.
The audiobook, entitled Prekmurščina, kinč predragi (The Language of Prekmurje, A Dear Treasure), is conceived as a supplementary, widely accessible sound document dedicated to the culture, history and most importantly the language of the region bordering Austria, Hungary and Croatia.
It's selection of texts whose written, spoke and sung versions will be accessible via QR codes, will span from the present and all the way back to when the region language's formal rules began to take form, the initiator of the project, the General Maister Society in Murska Sobota, told the press.
The monograph will celebrate a dialect that was used in several hundred books and had been developed into a separate standardised language in the 18th and 19th century before being incorporated into standard Slovenian in the 20th century.
The project, expected to be completed before the end of the year, was announced ahead of the 17 August national holiday marking the day when Prekmurje was united with the rest of the nation after more than a millennium in 1919.
