Cement maker Salonit Anhovo taps solar energy

Economy

Anhovo - A new solar power plant, the first of several planned, was launched on Thursday on the roof of cement maker Salonit Anhovo. The factory, which has faced pollution accusations in the past, said all the electricity generated by the 2.23 megawatt solar power plant will immediately be used in production.

The solar power plant is one of the largest factory rooftop installations in Slovenia. It is expected to produce 2120 megawatt-hours of electricity a year, which equals the amount used annually by about 500 households.

The cement plant factory, which caused an uproar last year over alleged plans to double the amount of waste it co-incinerates, wants to generate more than a third of the electricity needed for its production from own renewable energy sources by 2025.

Backed by the government's Green Transition incentive scheme, the plant was installed by the company Interenergo, which is expanding its investments in solar under the energy contracting model.

Interenergo will take care of the power plant and carry out maintenance work, while Salonit will buy electricity from Interenergo for 25 years at a contractually fixed price.

The value of the investment was not revealed, but it was announced that the cooperation between Interenergo and Salonit Anhovo was continuing with the deployment of an additional 1.5 megawatt of rooftop solar by the end of this year.
