Fajon welcomes EU consensus on Russia visa policy

Politics

Prague - Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon has welcomed the decision by EU foreign ministers to suspend a 2007 visa facilitation deal with Russia as a measure that "clearly speaks to our determination to condemn Russia's unacceptable aggression."

"I'm glad we've shown unity... Today's decision constitutes a significant reduction in the number of EU visas for Russian nationals," she was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the Foreign Ministry after EU foreign ministers reached the deal on Wednesday.

She noted that groups such as students and journalists would still be able to get fast-track visas, as will individuals at serious risk from the Russian regime.

"We wish to give a clear signal to the Russian public that there is an important difference between ordinary citizens and those who support Russia's aggression," she said.

Prior to the session Fajon said she personally favoured a suspension of the visa facilitation agreement with Russia over an outright ban advocated by some member states.
