Novo Mesto - One person died and three were wounded in a shooting near Brezje, an informal Roma settlement in Novo Mesto area, on Saturday night. The suspect was arrested this morning, Novo Mesto police said.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man, appears to have shot dead a 22-year-old man from Novo Mesto along the main road between Mirna Peč and Novo Mesto.

Three more persons, a woman and two men aged between 19 and 27, were wounded and have been taken to hospital.

One man sustained injuries to his head and was transported to UKC Ljubljana hospital.

The suspect has been identified by the police as Mirko Pilinger. He was arrested this morning.

Last evening about a hundred people who knew the killed man gathered in front of the Novo Mesto Hospital for a peaceful vigil, according to police.

Firearm incidents are rare in Slovenia and this looks set to be one of the worst shootings in years.
