Kostyuk/Martincova win Portorož WTA doubles tournament
Portorož - Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Czech Tereza Martincova won the WTA doubles tournament at the Slovenian seaside of Portorož on Sunday after defeating the Spanish-Slovak pair of Cristina Bucsa and Tereza Mihalikova 6:4 and 6:0 in the finals.
The match went on for an hour and eight minutes and it took the winning pair a while to settle into rhythm after losing on a serve in the third game. But then, after falling behind 2:4, they rallied to win ten games in a row for the tournament victory.
It was Martincova's third WTA final and her first win. Earlier this year, she lost the doubles finals in Melbourne at the preliminary tournament and in Adelaide. For the Ukrainian, it was her second final after losing in the Canary Islands last year. The winners received EUR 9,680 for their victory.
In her acceptance address Kostyuk dedicated her first tournament victory to Ukraine. She thanked everyone and in particular her partner Tereza.
"When we last played doubles I broke my leg, but it was obviously for good luck," she said congratulating the finalists on their excellent play and the organisers on the tournament.
"You've said it all, so let me just thank you, Marta, for not injuring yourself today. It was my goal she make it healthy through the tournament," Martincova said, praising the excellent organisation of the tournament.
The EUR 203,000 WTA Zavarovalnica Sava Tournament will wrap up with the singles finals between Jelena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.
