Minister Fajon hosts Green Group meeting in New York
New York - Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon has taken part in a number of ministerials and held over a dozen bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General assembly in New York over the past four days. She has also signed an agreement on economic cooperation with Kyrgyzstan and hosted a meeting of the Green Group.
Fajon hosted a working meeting of the informal Green Group at the Slovenian mission to the UN, stressing that forces should be joined in fighting the climate crises.
"More than ever, alliances are needed, just as we in the Green Group have come together. By example, we can promote awareness raising and the exchange of good practice."
The group features six small countries at the level of ministers of Slovenia, Iceland, Costa Rica, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Cape Verde.
It was set up in 2009 on Slovenia's initiative to promote environmental issues, from climate change to energy sources, and sustainable development in foreign policy.
The latest meeting discussed the coming conferences organised by the group's members and the potential for joint action.
"For many countries, responding effectively to the environmental crisis is a matter of survival," Fajon stressed in the discussion.
The minister also took part in a discussion on making accountable perpetrators of sexual violence and other violations of international humanitarian law.
She urged the international community to strengthen action to prevent such violence, improve access to justice, speed up investigations and prosecutions, and increase support for victims.
Fajon also participated in Technology for Democracy, a discussion where she thanked Denmark for the Copenhagen Initiative on Technology for Democracy, which provides a framework for a shared digital future based on democratic values and human rights.
The minister has signed the economic cooperation agreement between Slovenia and Kyrgyzstan, under which a Slovenian-Kyrgyzstan intergovernmental commission will be set up.
The commission will exchange information about the economic cooperation in respective countries, identify obstacles to bilateral economic cooperation and propose measures to address them while also preparing proposals to improve business cooperation.
Fajon will sign a similar agreement with Algeria.
On the invitation of the German and Swedish foreign ministers, she took part in a discussion on foreign policy, highlighting the role of women's thinking in politics.
"I, too, am an advocate of feminism in international policy-making to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The voice of women and girls, especially in crises, must be heard," she stressed.
On Monday, the Slovenian delegation, which also features President Borut Pahor, will host a reception for UN members at which Fajon will present Slovenia's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2024-2025.
