Ljubljana - Environmental taxes and duties collected last year were up by 5% compared to the previous year to contribute EUR 1.45 million to the budget, the Statistics Office (SURS) said on Tuesday. Energy taxes and duties accounted for 82.7% of this sum, which is an 8% annual rise.

Taxes on transport represented 13.5% of the revenue from environmental taxes and duties, a drop of 8%.

Meanwhile, taxes on pollution and on the use of natural resources together accounted for 3.8% of all environmental taxes, down 4% and 3%, respectively, compared to 2020.

Last year's overall rise in budgetary revenue from environmental taxes comes after a 18% drop was recorded in the Covid year 2020.

Households paid the bulk of environmental taxes last year - 57.3%, followed by businesses with 38.8%.

The remaining 3.9% came from non-residents, largely foreigners transiting Slovenia.

The share of environmental taxes in Slovenia's GDP slightly dropped compared to 2020, by 0.1 percentage point to 2.8%.
