Kranj - A large deserted building in the city of Kranj caught fire on Monday at around 11:30pm, but the fire has already been largely put out. There were no injured but 67 locals were evacuated, with damage caused to several near-by buildings, including a power station, the Kranj Police Department said on Tuesday.

The fire, which was spotted by police officers, has damaged one flat in the adjacent block of flats, three vehicles, the glass on the buildings across the street, and part of the hydro power station on the river Sava.

Just over 130 firefighters from a number of fire brigades took part in the effort to put it out, managing to localise the fire at around 1am.

Some firefighters have remained at the site to take care of individual hotspots.

Kranj police said that the interior of the 1,800 sq. metre building was yet to be inspected and the cause of the fire established.

They warned that the building is completely destroyed and could collapse, so the Jelenov Klanec area remains closed to traffic.

The evacuated residents were temporarily accommodated at the lobby of the municipal building, said the national Civil Protection and Disaster Relief Administration.
