No semis for Slovenia, but expectations exceeded

Sport

Slovenia squandered their chances of advancing to the semi-finals of the European Women's Handball Championship, having lost 25:29 (14:14) at the hands of Hungary on 16 November. The team has nevertheless exceeded expectations.

This was the second straight loss for Slovenia in the second stage of the tournament, which is being co-hosted by Slovenia, Montenegro and North Macedonia. They lost to Norway after defeating Croatia last week.

Slovenia's original goal heading into the tournament was to make it to the second stage, which they attained.

The team finished 8th overall, which means they have trumped their best showing so far, which was 9th place at the 2004 tournament in Hungary.

"The wish was immense. We wanted to bid farewell with a victory, but somehow we did not get going... We were close though," said NataĊĦa Lepoja, who scored five goals against Hungary.

"A great thanks to all the fans. We achieved something great, I'm proud of this team," she added.
