Zana wins Tour of Slovenia
Italian rider Filippo Zana (Jayco-AlUla) has won the Tour of Slovenia, a dream finish after a spectacular yet injury-free fall in the penultimate stage. He came in second in the last stage on 18 June but retained his lead on the stage winner, the Slovenian Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious)-
The 142.6-kilometre stage between Vrhnika and Novo Mesto was Mohorič's first victory at the Tour of Slovenia and the 18th in his career.
He was in the lead in some key segments of the route, especially on the climb up Trška Gora, not far from the finish line. Zana was the only one able to keep pace with him.
Zana fell behind on the descend, but Mohorič waited for him and edged him in the final sprint in Novo Mesto.
"This was the only stage on the Tour of Slovenia that suited me, it has been our goal from the very start. I did it, I gave it all that I had to give on the final ascent to Trška Gora for the fans, for Gino," Mohorič said as he dedicated his win to the recently deceased cyclist Gino Mäder.
Zana said he took the ascent more slowly because he crashed in the penultimate stage. "But I thank Matej for waiting for me after the end of the descent... He won the stage, I won the race. This is the perfect ending."
Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates), one of the favourites to win the race, finished in third place overall.
