Number of Tourist up, Tourist Sector in trouble (?)

On the annual level, the Statistics Office registered 11.1% fewer domestic tourists and 9.1% less domestic overnight stays, while the number of foreign tourists increased by 6.9% and the number of foreign overnight stays by 3.3%.

Foreign tourists accounted for 68% of all overnight stays, with the most coming from Germany (16%). Behind them were Austrians (13%), Italians (12%), Russians (7%), and those from the United Kingdom (5%) and the US (3%).

According to the office, two-thirds of all overnight stays were recorded in hotels, while 11% of tourists stayed their nights in camps and 5% in holiday dwellings.

Spa resorts were the most popular destination, accounting for almost a third of all overnight stays. They were followed by sea resorts (24%) and mountain resorts (22%). The capital attracted 11% of all overnight stays in Slovenia.

In the first nine months of 2012, the number of tourists in Slovenia grew by 2.8% and the number of overnight stays by 1.1%, compared to the same period last year.

The numbers of domestic tourists and domestic overnight stays was down 3.2% and 4.7%, respectively, while the numbers of foreign tourists and foreign overnight stays was up by 6.1% and 5.2%, respectively.
