Floods Damaged Over 2,200 Buildings

Slovenia's second biggest insurer Zavarovalnica Maribor has already started assessing the damage. First estimates put it at some EUR 10m.

This includes damage caused to property owned by individuals as well as railway and power facilities and businesses, the insurer said.

Bohinj deputy Mayor Jože Sodja said rough estimates put the damage in the Bohinj area at about EUR 1m.

Numerous roads in the Podravje (NE) and Koroško (N) regions, the central Zasavje region and the Celje area are still closed due to flooding. The Vič border crossing with Austria is closed on the Austrian side, while the border crossings with Croatia Ormož and Zavrč are also closed.

Mountain pass Jezersko is closed on the Austrian side.

The Custom Administration said that the Središče ob Dravi border crossing with Croatia was also closed and that traffic was being redirected to the smaller Središče of Dravi I crossing, which would temporarily function as an international border crossing and would be open round the clock.

The railway connection between Celje and Velenje is partly open and trains between Maribor and Prevalje (N) are running as scheduled again, railway operator Slovenske železnice said in a press release.

The Drava river is still causing some problems in the Ormož area (NE), and firefighters were pumping water from the flooded buildings across the country, But of the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief said. The Slovenian Armed Forces are also helping clean the mud swept in by the swollen rivers and creeks.

But visited Ljubno ob Savinji (N) today where the flood swept away a bridge over the Savinja River connecting the town of some 250 people with the main road. He said the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief would send experts there tomorrow to come up with a temporary solution.

Several roads were damaged in the Ljubno municipality and at least 50 buildings were flooded, one business facility was swept away, and more than 15 landslides were launched.

The water supply to Ljubno is cut off and some areas of the municipality are still without drinking water. Firefighters saved a person from a flooded vehicle there yesterday.

Several companies in the Celje area (NE) were also flooded, including the spa Thermana Laško and brewery Pivovarna Laško. The boss of the former, Roman Matek, expects the damage to be lower than in the 2007 flooding when it topped EUR 3m.

Photovoltaic modules producer Bisol Group from Prebold estimates the damage from flooding to EUR 2m.
