Roglič in good position after winning Vuelta stage 8
The result means that Roglič gained four bonus seconds on Evenepoel, considered one of the main rivals for the overall title, as the race lead went to fellow Jumbo Visma rider Sepp Kuss.
"It was already nice but most of all I'm happy that I recovered from the crash. Just enjoying now and we go day by day. You always hope for the best. The guys did a really amazing job, controlling the really strong breakaway. Then we had no option in the end," Roglič said after the race.
Acknowledging the stage was hard, he said the sprint is "always a bit of a gamble but I had the legs, and I could do it."
Roglič has now climbed to 7th place in the general classification, just seven seconds behind Evenepoel and four seconds ahead of Jumbo Visma team mate Jonas Vingegaard.
This is Roglič's 11th win at La Vueltas, 78th career win, and 13th this year.
