Bankers Want Bad Bank Operational ASAP

There are quite a few pieces of banking legislation that are just ink on paper; bankers do not want that happening with the act establishing the bad bank, the head of the Bank Association, France Arhar, told the press after the meeting.

Executive regulations must make the law operational in practice as soon as possible, he said, adding that Finance Minister Janez Šušteršič had promised bankers they would be involved in the drafting of the executive regulations.

The legislation, which is designed to purge the bank system of bad loans, may not be coercive. It needs to be open so that the banks can assess what pays off. "Bankers see the legislation as an option, not as coercion," Arhar noted.
