Coalition Summit to Decide Fate of Proposed VAT Raise

Nekategorizirano

The coalition remains divided on changes to the value added tax law, with most parties opposing in particular a higher VAT on newspapers. The fate of the motion will be discussed in parliament today.

Held after the government's regular weekly session, the summit comes as an attempt to find a compromise on this or find an alternative to fill the state coffers. An alternative floated recently could come in the form of a crisis tax. Under the proposal, a one-percent additional tax would be added to the income tax in the crisis years.

Coalition partners are also expected to discuss progress in labour and pension reform negotiations as well as the two referendum requests which hang over the laws on the Slovenia Sovereign Holding and the bad bank, two key government anti-crisis measures.
