Slovenian cycling superstar Tadej Pogačar rode to another stunning solo victory in his debut Giro d'Italia to claim his sixth stage win and cement his huge overall lead ahead of the final procession into Rome to bask in glory.

The 25-year-old UAE Team Emirates rider was cheered by a huge number of Slovenian fans lining the route on the double ascent of the Monte Grappa and on the descent to the finish line in Bassano del Grappa.

He had been repeating that he was going for a win today, his rivals knew it, but could not stop him.

After a blistering speed set by his UAE Team Emirates team, the Slovenian attacked with 36.5 km to go to the finish line or 5.5 km left on the second ascent of the Monte Grappa, dropping his rivals with ease.

He then caught up with the last remaining of the breakaway group, Italian Giulio Pellizzari (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) to reach the final summit alone before descending to an enormous solo victory of 2:07.

"We took no risks on the descent. I had good legs and a good gap at the top [of the second ascent], which meant I did not have to take risks on the downhill," Pogačar said after the race.

"We had the pink jersey from stage two, and today was another test before the summer to see how it is. I wanted to finish the Giro with a good mentality and in good shape. I think I achieved that."

Taking second place was France's Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) ahead of Columbian Dani Martínez (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Heading into the final day, Pogačar is nine minutes and 57 seconds clear of Martinez and ten minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Welshman Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).

Safe through the final stage, Pogačar will succeed his compatriot Primož Roglič as the Giro d'Italia winner, after chalking up 76 career victories. Sunday's will be his 77th.
