Slovenia will field 90 athletes in the Paris Olympics, eleven athletes more than in the previous largest national team of 79 athletes, who competed in Athens in 2004.

"It will not only be the largest but also a very gender-balanced team, with 44 female and 46 male athletes," Slovenian Olympic Committee president Franjo Bobinac said as the team was presented.

While Tadej Pogačar, the best-ranked Slovenian rider, is in the four-member cycling team, the nation's second-best cyclist Primož Roglič, who won gold in time trial at the previous Olympics in Tokyo 2021, has not yet been confirmed.

The cycling team is still subject to change, depending on the developments in the ongoing Tour de France, where Pogačar is in the leading position in general classification and Roglič was in the top ten before dropping out on 12 July, following a crash the previous day.

The cycling team selection was not without controversy after Urška Žigart, the country's top female cyclist, was not named to the Olympic squad.

"There are many things that I could write, but instead I prefer to write my own story holding my head up high. This is not easy to accept, but some battles are lost before they even start. Good luck to everyone whose dream has come true," she said in a social media post.

Slovenia will participate for the first time ever in the Summer Olympics in three team sports - the men's and women's handball teams and the men's volleyball team.

The line-up features a number of athletes who could win a medal, including the almost unbeatable sport climber Janja Garnbret, who will be defending her gold medal from Tokyo. "I am psyched to go to Paris," she said.

Kitesurfer Toni Vodišek is the former world and European champion, while discus thrower Kristjan Čeh has recently won the gold medal at the European championships in Rome.

"In addition to the cyclists headlined by Pogačar, we have quite a few truly outstanding athletes in the team. Canoeists and judokas are also there, so we should let ourselves be positively surprised," said Bobinac.

The head of the Slovenian team Uroš Mohorič said the team includes many candidates who have a good chance to medal. "I'm convinced we'll return from Paris with a nice collection of medals," he said at the official team presentation on 11 July.

Countries have until 25 July to declare the flag bearer. Bobinac has said that there will probably be two flag bearers - one male and one female athlete.

Slovenian fans will be able to celebrate potential Slovenian medals in Parc de la Villette, the site of the Slovenian House, which the country's economy, tourism, culture and cuisine will also be promoted.
