Slovenia's Kristjan Čeh finished fourth in the men's discus throw at the Paris Olympics. He was less than one metre short of clinching a medal, improving on his Tokyo 2020 result.

This is the second time that Čeh competed in the Olympics after finishing fifth in Tokyo three years go, with his best result at the time being a throw of 66.37 metres.

This time he outdid that result in his first attempt, throwing a distance of 67.27 metres at the Stade de France to rank second in the first round. He was even better on his second try with a throw of 68.41 metres, which proved his best result in the end.

Čeh fouled on his third try and recorded a throw of 66.36 metres in his fourth attempt to slide down to fourth place. He went into the final two attempts trying to move one spot up to clinch a medal, but failed to do so with a throw of 66.34 metres and a foul throw, respectively.

Nevertheless this is one of Slovenia's best results in track and field at the Olympic Games. The country has so far won a total of four Olympic medals in athletics.

"I had a good start to the competition...I had one good throw that unfortunately hit the net. I felt good, but everything did not fall into place to propel me further," he told the public broadcaster RTV Slovenija after the competition.

He noted that in the two previous Olympic Games his best result would have been enough for a medal, but added that today's competition was one for the history books when it came to the recorded distances.

At the age of 25, Čeh is still relatively young for a discus thrower, but he has already achieved a lot in this sport. He won the 2022 World Athletics Championships and took gold at this year's European Athletics Championships.

Jamaica's Roje Stona won gold in an upset win with a distance of 70.00 metres, beating the Olympic record of 69.89 metres, which had been set by double Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna, the father of Lithuania's Mykolas Alekna, who took silver with a throw of 69.97 metres. Bronze medal went to Australia's Matthew Denny (69.31 metres).

So far, Slovenia has won one medal at the Paris Olympics as Andreja Leški won gold in the women's judo under 63kg category last week.
