Man who made knife threats sentenced to psychiatric treatment
A young man who threatened passers-by with two knives at a busy bus stop in the Ljubljana city centre in March this year has been found guilty of assault on police officers and sentenced to one year of psychiatric treatment.
The 23-year-old pleaded guilty and the Ljubljana District Court handed down its verdict on 23 August.
The verdict is based on a psychiatric evaluation that found the young man committed his act in a state of reduced sanity.
The man's condition has been improving while undergoing treatment at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, where he has been detained since the attack.
The time he has spent in psychiatric detention will count towards the one-year sentence.
The man threatened passers-by at Bavarski Dvor in Ljubljana with two knives for over an hour in March.
The police cordoned off the area and a special unit with a negotiator intervened but the man stopped only after his relative arrived. One police officer sustained light injuries.
