Slovenia's best table tennis player Darko Jorgić has won the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lima 2024 with a prize money of US$80,000 (€71,500). The 26-year-old defeated the top seed, German Patrick Franziska 4:0 (5,9,3,7) in the finals on 25 August to clinch his first WTT tournament win.

"I knew why I came to Lima, I knew I wanted to win a WTT tournament," Jorgić, the second-seeded player in Lima, told the Slovenian Association of Table Tennis after the match, adding that he already came close to winning a WTT tournament twice but was left empty-handed.

The Slovenian had improved by form throughout the tournament. "The first match against Japan's Ryoichi Yoshiyama was the hardest, then it went more smoothly."

"I know Patrick very well, which also showed in the game. It's always the little things that decide when we play," said Jorgić, who is back among top 16 table tennis players in the world after the tournament win.

Jorgić and Franziska have been playing together for several years in Saarbrücken in the German table tennis Bundesliga. They won the Champions League together this year and last, and in their last matches at international tournaments, the 32-year-old German won the previous two.

Jorgić also competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics where he was knocked out in the round of 16 in both men's singles and the team event.
