The Slovenian acrobatic group Dunking Devils Squad has launched its latest innovation at the Macher Festival in Germany - a human cannon that has sent willing participants flying more than 40 metres far.

It took the group six months to develop the device, an innovation they say was born out of a desire to create unforgettable experiences for adrenaline enthusiasts.

Initial tests were performed in a standing position, but the forces proved too strong to maintain balance. So the Dunking Devils Squad developed a special seat that makes a safe launch possible even for those without prior acrobatic skills.

The seat also gives more control over the launch, making it possible for the users to be propelled to extreme heights and lengths, the group said in a press release.

Macher Festival proved an ideal platform to test the device for the first time in public. The team started launching festival participants at 50% capacity, before stepping up the intensity.

At the final setting at an angle of 40 degrees, the best results were achieved as Jan Žnidaršič, a member of the group, was propelled 43 metres far, attaining an acceleration of 12G, more than double that of the best Formula 1 race cars, the group said.

"The feeling of such acceleration is incredible, especially when you experience it for the first time. The adrenaline rush means you don't realise what has happened at first, you are just beamed up," Žnidaršič said after the flight.

"We gradually increased the intensity to get used to it, but we were still struck by how strong the contrast is between the extreme acceleration at launch and the feeling of complete weightlessness in the air. It was like being teleported into water," he added.

During the launch, a person weighing 90 kilos had an extreme experience as the speed increased from zero to 75 kilometres per hour in just 0.6 seconds.

Videos of the human cannon quickly went viral and attracted a lot of attention on social media. In three days, they reached more than 160 million views.

Dunking Devils say it might be possible to test the human cannon at an event next year at one of Slovenia's lakes.
