Slovenia to take in injured Gaza children for treatment
Slovenia will receive eight to ten injured children from Gaza for health and psychosocial rehabilitation as part of a project supported by the Foreign Ministry.
The children will receive intensive treatment, including surgeries, rehabilitation, prosthetics and other medical equipment. They will be treated at the URI Soča rehabilitation centre in Ljubljana and other healthcare institutions if needed, the ministry said.
The project will also provide financial aid to nearly a thousand families in Gaza who have been internally displaced because of the war. This will allow more than 5,000 Gaza residents to buy food and other necessities.
The ministry signed an agreement on the project with the Catholic charity Caritas Slovenia on 12 September. The government will provide €700,000. The project also involves the foundation of former Slovenian President Danilo Türk.
More than 1.1 million people are suffering from severe food shortages and hunger in Gaza, most of them children.
The URI Soča centre has been involved in treatment of Palestinian children before, including as part of activities organised by the Slovenian-run fund for demining, ITF Enhancing Human Security.
