Freediver Artnik Burghardt claims fifth world title
Slovenian freediving sensation Alenka Artnik Burghardt claimed her fifth consecutive world title at the CMAS World Championship Freediving Depth in Kalamata, Greece on 6 October. The 42-year-old performed an impressive dive to 116 metres in the constant weight apnea category using a monofin.
Artnik Burghardt has shown "the grace, strength, and composure that have become her trademarks," CMAS said, adding that defending the title for four consecutive years was an extraordinary achievement in the highly competitive world of freediving.
"Artnik's smooth and powerful descent, followed by a flawless return to the surface, left no doubt that she is still the diver to beat," CMAS said, adding that the Koper native emerged from the water calm and composed, showing no signs of pressure.
In a post on Facebook, Artnik Burghardt said she was very happy about her result, saying the dive had not been easy, as she did not get to train as much as she would have wanted due to injury.
Hanako Hiros of Japan came second, descending to 113 metres, with Italian Alessia Zecchini in third, reaching the depth of 109 metres.
The only other Slovenian in the competition was Mojca Haberman, who dived to 85 metres and came in 13th place.
