Ljubljana fashion design students have created an innovative collection of reflective clothing and accessories as part a campaign to raise awareness about traffic safety and visibility.

The collection, See Ya (Dejmo Se videt), takes its inspiration from street and business fashion and heritage and is aimed primarily at young people.

The young are most common users of micromobility devices such as bicycles, e-bikes and electric scooters and are often involved in road accidents.

The collection, designed by fashion design students the Ljubljana Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, premiered at the recent Ljubljana Fashion Week.

One of the mentors, Sara Valenci told reporters on 14 October that the biggest challenge was taking responsibility to create clothes that would be safe enough for all people.

At the beginning of the process, everyone was familiar with reflective fabrics, but later they also learnt about reflective yarns, reflective printing paste and reflective foils.

"I hope this project will get young people and everyone in traffic to reflect on the importance of being seen in traffic and realise it's not hard to add to safety in various ways, regardless of personal style or aesthetics," said Anže Orešnik, one of the students.

A survey commissioned by the insurer Zavarovalnica Triglav and conducted among 800 riders of bicycles, e-bikes and electric scooters, showed only about half feel safe and one in three electric scooter riders has had an accident.

The respondents' biggest fear in traffic is to be overlooked by larger vehicles, said Ana Cergolj Kebler, head of safe mobility at Zavarovalnica Triglav.

She noted that traffic visibility accessories have been around for decades, but young people often opt for style when choosing between style and visibility.

David Razboršek of the traffic safety promotion institute Vozim, which is also involved in the campaign, described fashion as one of the most powerful forces in bringing about societal change.

He urged everyone to wear bright or reflective clothing and reflectors in particular in autumn and winter when the days are shorter.
