New women's record for Ljubljana Marathon
Kenyan runner Chepkemoi Tele won the 28th Ljubljana Marathon by setting a new women's record of the event in two hours, 20 minutes and 17 seconds. Tamire Getaneh Molla from Ethiopia reigned victorious among male athletes with 2:06:29.
Joyce Chepkemoi Tele improved the event record set by Ethiopian Zinash Gerado Senbeta last year by 48 seconds. Sanbeta placed third this time (2:24:04), behind her compatriot Gadise Mulu Demissie (2:20:59) in second.
The 2023 title defender in the men's competition, Kenyan Edmond Kipngetich finished as the runner-up this time, 34 seconds behind the winner, followed by his compatriot Collins Kipkurui Kipkorir, a further 25 seconds adrift.
The top-finishing Slovenian male runner was Primož Kobe from Novo Mesto, who placed 8th, finishing the 42km course in two hours, 18 minutes and 21 seconds, to improve by a second the Slovenian best at the Ljubljana Marathon, set by Roman Kejžar in 1998.
The best local in the women's competition, Anja Fink Malenšek finished the marathon in two hours, 39 minutes and 10 seconds, to place 6th.
Marathon runners hit the course in the centre of Slovenia's capital in foggy weather at below 9 degrees Celsius, but by the time they circled the city to the finish line, the fog had given way to sunshine.
A total 13,044 runners took part in 10km, 21km and 42km runs on 20 October, with almost 2,900 registered for the longest run. About a third of the runners came from abroad, according to organizers, who said registrations came from a record 86 countries.
The runners were cheered on by a brass band and supporters along the track and in seven fan zones.
On the eve of the biggest running event in Slovenia, more than 8,000 children and youth took part in runs designated for them, from kindergarten kids to secondary school students.
