As the Americans cast their votes to elect a new president and members of Congress, Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat of Slovenian descent, has won her fourth term as senator from Minnesota and far-right Republican Paul Gosar from Arizona has been re-elected to the House of Representatives.

Having won the senator races in 2006, 2012 and 2018, Klobuchar this time ran against ex-basketball player Royce White, a supporter of Donald Trump, who has already secured enough electoral college votes to win the election.

Gosar meanwhile defeated Democrat Quacy Smith in Arizona's district nine. He has served as a member of the House of Representatives since 2011.

Slovenian officials have congratulated Trump on his convincing election victory, expressing willingness to work with him and his administration and the US as an ally.

"Our transatlantic family and the entire international community face many challenges today, and your leadership in addressing them will be of key importance," President Nataša Pirc Musar wrote on X.

"Slovenia is ready to work with you. Only together we can build a more democratic, safer, and greener world," Pirc Musar added.

"I look forward to working with you at a time when the world needs strong leadership to end wars and secure peace," Prime Minister Robert Golob wrote on the government's X profile.

In her congratulatory post on X, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said "the US is our leading ally, with whom Slovenia will continue to work to promote global security and economic growth".

National Assembly President Urška Klakočar Zupančič expressed the hope that Trump's decisions will contribute to a peaceful resolution of the crises in the Middle East, Ukraine and other parts of the world.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Sevnica, the town in eastern Slovenia that Melania Trump hails from, expressed his pride at her becoming the US First Lady again.

"As a Sevnica man, Slovenian, I'm proud that [Melania Trump] is the First Lady again, and I'm also proud that her son Barron speaks and understands Slovenian, which is something that all Slovenians can be proud of," Mayor Srečko Ocvirk said, congratulating Trump on the election victory.

He said Melania Trump's popularity as the First Lady has made Sevnica and the whole Slovenia more recognised, and that the message of her story is that anyone from every place can achieve a lot when they make an effort.
