New President Receives Congratulations from Abroad

Milanović said he was looking forward to the future partnership that would benefit both countries and to cooperation in bilateral, regional and European issues.

The Croatian president meanwhile pointed out that neighbourly relations were marked by proximity, understanding and solidarity of two nations and expressed conviction that Slovenia and Croatia will get even closer in these crisis times.He said he hoped to meet Pahor as soon as possible.

Ivanov also expressed wish for continued cooperation between the countries and called for Slovenia's support in Macedonia's inclusion into European integrations.

Ader congratulated Pahor in a personal letter, highlighting the close ties between the countries and expressing hope for a meeting with Pahor. The same wish was expressed by Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

Schulz meanwhile tweeted that he was "looking forward to good coop for brighter future in Europe", while congratulations also came from Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

The president of the Party of European Socialists (PES), Sergei Stanishev, said Pahor's victory reflected the need for a more "progressive attitude" of the state. He attributed Pahor's success to his honesty and respect to the electorate.

The head of the S&D deputy group Hannes Swoboda and former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder sent cables of congratulations as well.

The newly elected president has also received congratulations from representatives of the Slovenian minorities in Austria and Italy.

Rudi Pavšič of the Slovenian Cultural and Business Association (SKGZ) in Italy expressed hope that Pahor will be able to realise the vision he has been promoting and continue on the path taken by the presidents of Slovenia, Croatia and Italy.

Head of the Community of Carinthian Slovenians (SKS) Bernard Sadovnik believes that Pahor will act so as to benefit not only Slovenian citizens but also those Slovenians who live outside the country's borders.
