Miha Matjašec, a 16-year-old Slovenian football talent, will join the perennial Austrian football champions Red Bull Salzburg starting from the 2025/26 season, following in the footsteps of the young star Benjamin Šeško.

The signing of the deal between Matjašec's club Domžale and Red Bull Salzburg, the 17-time champions of Austria, was first reported by the Austrian press agency APA on 11 March.

The midfielder, who only recently played his first match for the senior team of Domžale against Olimpija Ljubljana, has been signed with Red Bull Salzburg until the end of June 2028. The trade will be formally realised at the end of this season.

According to APA, Matjašec will first be earning his chops on loan in Liefering, a club based in the eponymous district of Salzburg which plays in the second Austrian league.

The Slovenian portal Nogomania reported that Domžale will receive a buyout of more than one million euros for the transfer of the promising youngster. The club has also secured bonuses and percentages from the player's future transfers.

Matjašec started his football career in Črenšovci in his native region of Prekmurje in the northeast. He later played for Odranci, another local club, and in Mura from Murska Sobota, where he excelled in the under-15 and under-17 teams.

His talent quickly caught the attention of the club from Domžale, just north of Ljubljana, where Matjažec established himself as a key young talent, and where his play earned him spots in the national under-17 team.

Red Bull Salzburg is known for developing young talent, with some of the best players in the world having gone through its youth programme, including Norwegian Erling Haaland and Senegalese Sadio Mane.

Matjašec follows in the footsteps of the young Slovenian star Benjamin Šeško, who also came to the Austrian club from Domžale and now plays for the Bundesliga side Leipzig.

Domžale executive director Matej Oražem told Nogomania that Matjašec had a lot of suitors in the summer after excellent performances at a tournament in Naples, including from the German and English elite leagues.
