As many as 93.2% of Slovenia's voters cast their ballots in the referendum. The decision for Slovenia's independence was backed by as many as 95% of those who had turned out or 88.5% of all eligible voters.

The outcome of the referendum paved the way for Slovenia to pass the Basic Constitutional Charter on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Slovenia on 25 June 1991.

The plebiscite took place following the first multi-party election in Slovenia in April of 1990.

Official state ceremonies marking the national holiday were held on Saturday. Independence and Unity Day has been observed since 2005.
